Part 1 — Summary Grasping the Self through Training and Purification of the Mind This teaching explains that Self-realization is possible only through a properly trained mind. Knowledge arises through śravaṇa (listening), manana (reflection), and nididhyāsana (deep contemplation), but these require inner preparedness. Why Mental Training Is Necessary The mind is the only instrument for realization. Both bondage and liberation are experienced only in the mind. However, the present mind is not fit for realization because it is influenced by the three guṇas of prakṛti: Tamas (inertia) → creates veiling (āvaraṇa) Rajas (restlessness) → creates distraction (vikṣepa) Sattva (clarity) → enables knowledge In us, sattva is mixed with rajas and tamas, so the mind cannot clearly perceive the Self.
