Knowledge Alone Is the Path to Liberation — #Brahma Sutras
Part 1 — Essence
This section establishes a fundamental distinction:
👉 Upāsana (Meditation)
👉 Jñāna (Realization)
These are not the same.
Upāsana means
creating and sustaining a thought with the mind.
Jñāna means
not creating anything new,
but recognizing what already exists.
Therefore,
Jñāna is not meditation — it is realization.
The Mind — the Primary Instrument
Bondage and liberation
are experienced only in the mind.
Worldly experience
and spiritual knowledge
both arise in the mind.
So true sādhanā
is not external action —
but an inner process of understanding.
Why Knowledge Alone is the Means
Actions and practices produce results.
But Brahman is not a result —
it is already accomplished.
So it cannot be produced by action.
It can only be known.
Thus the scriptures prescribe:
Śravaṇa → Manana → Nididhyāsana
Together they create the Brahmākāra-vṛtti —
the knowledge of Brahman.
How Realization Happens
The mind takes the form of what it contemplates.
Thinking of the world → world-vṛtti
Thinking of Brahman → Brahman-vṛtti
When this vṛtti matures,
it becomes direct realization —
that is liberation.
Are Actions Necessary?
Yes — but only conditionally.
1️⃣ Before knowledge
→ actions purify the mind
2️⃣ After knowledge
→ actions are no longer required
So:
Actions are the path — knowledge is the goal.
Final Insight (Part 1)
Brahman is not something to be produced —
it is to be recognized.
Actions prepare the mind.
Knowledge reveals the truth.
Upāsana is practice.
Jñāna is realization.
Mokṣa is one’s true nature.
Part 2 — Essence
This section clarifies
👉 the scope of action
👉 and its role in gaining knowledge
Action does not give liberation.
It removes obstacles to knowledge.
Why Action is Needed
Two obstacles block knowledge:
1️⃣ Āvaraṇa (Veiling — Tamas)
2️⃣ Vikṣepa (Restlessness — Rajas)
Action and upāsana
remove these obstacles.
They do not produce knowledge —
they prepare the ground.
Simple Analogy
Preparation ≠ Cooking
Cleaning and arranging the kitchen
is not cooking.
Likewise:
Action = preparation
Knowledge = cooking
Realization = nourishment
After Knowledge
Once knowledge arises,
action has no role in producing liberation.
Because realization is through knowledge alone.
True Result of Action
Action → purification
Meditation → concentration
Knowledge → liberation
When impurities are exhausted,
knowledge arises naturally.
The Horse Analogy
A horse is meant to pull a chariot,
not plough a field.
Similarly,
action is for preparation,
not for liberation.
Final Insight (Part 2)
Respect action —
but transcend it.
Without action, knowledge is difficult.
Without knowledge, liberation is impossible.
Part 3 — Essence
This section explains
👉 the vision of an Advaitin
👉 the hierarchy of practices
👉 when knowledge arises
Who is a True Advaitin?
Not one who rejects the world —
but one who sees everything as the Self.
Doing and not doing
are the same for him.
Life becomes a divine play.
Why This Vision is Misunderstood
Ritualists see him as inactive.
Devotees see him as irreverent.
But an Advaitin rejects nothing —
he simply places everything in its right place.
Hierarchy of Practice
Closest to knowledge:
👉 inner discipline (śama, dama)
For seekers:
👉 karma yoga
👉 upāsana
All practices culminate in knowledge.
When Should Action be Given Up?
Not immediately.
Only after knowledge is firm —
like leaving school after graduation.
When Does Knowledge Arise?
In this very life.
Because no one practices
expecting results only in some distant future.
Why Realization May Be Delayed
Only one reason:
👉 obstruction (pratibandha)
Mostly due to prārabdha karma.
Without obstruction, realization is immediate.
Final Insight (Part 3)
Advaita rejects nothing.
It integrates everything —
but ultimately knowledge alone remains.
Part 4 — Essence
Knowledge does not depend
only on present effort.
It depends on
👉 present practice
👉 past karma
The Role of Prārabdha
If there is no obstruction → realization now
If obstruction exists → realization later
This explains why
people progress at different speeds.
No Effort is Ever Lost
Spiritual effort is never wasted.
If not completed now,
it continues in future births
as spiritual inclination and maturity.
Intensity Matters
Strong longing → faster realization
Mild interest → gradual progress
This is not luck —
it is inner readiness.
Scriptural Assurance
No sincere effort is destroyed.
Even a fallen yogi resumes later
and ultimately attains liberation.
Final Insight (Part 4)
Knowledge is not an event —
it is maturation.
Practice is not a task —
it is accumulation.
Prārabdha is not a barrier —
it is timing.
What is sought
will inevitably be realized.
