The Forgotten Truth — Brahman Rediscovered#Brahma Sutras
Part 1 — Summary
Grasping the Self through Training and Purification of the Mind
This teaching explains that Self-realization is possible only through a properly trained mind.
Knowledge arises through śravaṇa (listening), manana (reflection), and nididhyāsana (deep contemplation), but these require inner preparedness.
Why Mental Training Is Necessary
The mind is the only instrument for realization.
Both bondage and liberation are experienced only in the mind.
However, the present mind is not fit for realization because it is influenced by the three guṇas of prakṛti:
Tamas (inertia) → creates veiling (āvaraṇa)
Rajas (restlessness) → creates distraction (vikṣepa)
Sattva (clarity) → enables knowledge
In us, sattva is mixed with rajas and tamas, so the mind cannot clearly perceive the Self.
Two Essential Trainings of the Mind
The preparation of the mind has two dimensions:
1️⃣ Purification (śuddhi)
2️⃣ Concentration (ekāgratā)
These are indispensable.
Karma Yoga removes tamas and purifies the mind.
Bhakti Yoga reduces rajas and brings focus.
Only when the mind becomes pure sattva does it become a fit instrument for knowledge.
Why the Self Appears Hidden
The Upaniṣads say the Self is present everywhere, in all beings and all times, yet it appears hidden.
This is not because the Self is absent —
it is because the mind is not subtle enough.
When the intellect becomes:
👉 sharp (śāgra)
👉 subtle (sūkṣma)
the Self becomes self-evident.
Nothing new is created;
the ever-present reality is simply recognized.
Difference Between Īśvara and the Individual
The difference between God and the individual is only in the condition of sattva:
Īśvara → pure sattva (free from rajas and tamas)
Jīva → impure sattva (mixed with rajas and tamas)
Because of pure sattva, Īśvara is experienced as omniscient and omnipotent,
whereas the individual feels limited.
The Three-Step Inner Journey
Once the mind is purified and focused, the real pursuit begins:
1️⃣ Śravaṇa → removes ignorance and reveals the teaching
2️⃣ Manana → removes doubts and clarifies understanding
3️⃣ Nididhyāsana → assimilates knowledge into life
When knowledge stabilizes,
the vision arises:
👉 The same reality exists within and without
👉 With eyes open or closed, only Brahman is seen
Integration into Life
Realization is not merely intellectual.
The understanding must flow into speech and action.
Then life itself becomes divine —
a continuous recognition of Brahman in all experiences.
Living Liberation (Jīvanmukti)
Advaita uniquely accepts liberation while living.
The realized one understands:
Experiences belong to the body-mind (upādhi)
The Self remains the witness
Just as space is unaffected by what happens inside a pot,
consciousness remains untouched by bodily conditions.
Core Message of Part 1
👉 The Self is ever-present
👉 The problem is not absence, but mental impurity
👉 Karma and devotion prepare the mind
👉 Knowledge alone reveals the truth
Train the mind → purify it → make it subtle → realize the Self
Here is the English version of your detailed summary of Part Two, keeping the same structure and depth.
---
🌿 Part Two — Essence (Expanded)
1️⃣ Maitreyi’s Question —
“Does knowledge remain after death?”
Maitreyi asks:
👉 “Will our intelligence, awareness, and knowledge
continue even after death?”
Yājñavalkya’s reply is crucial:
👉 “Na pretya saṃjñā asti”
Meaning:
Personal cognition does not continue in the same way.
Hearing this creates fear:
👉 “Does knowledge disappear then?”
Here lies the profound distinction.
🌼 Two Types of Knowledge
1️⃣ Vijnāna (Particular Knowledge)
This is individual knowledge:
👉 the sense of “I”
👉 the world
👉 experiences
It arises through the mind.
It:
✔ begins after birth
✔ ends with death
Hence it is called relative knowledge.
2️⃣ Prajnāna (Universal Knowledge)
This is:
👉 all-pervading consciousness
👉 knowledge of one’s true nature
It:
✔ exists before birth
✔ continues during life
✔ remains after death
It never changes.
Therefore the Upanishadic declaration:
👉 “Prajnānam Brahma”
🌊 The Three Stages — A Key Clarity
Life appears in three stages:
1️⃣ Birth
2️⃣ Life
3️⃣ Death
Vijnāna changes across these stages.
But Prajnāna:
👉 witnesses all three
It remains unchanged.
🪞 Particular vs Universal
Particular (Vyāvṛtti)
👉 When one is present, the other is absent
Examples:
Happiness ≠ sorrow
Life ≠ death
I ≠ you
This is the realm of the world.
Universal (Anuvṛtti)
👉 That which exists in all states
The same consciousness:
✔ in birth
✔ in life
✔ in death
That is Prajnāna.
🚪 The Mystery of Death
A profound teaching:
Death is not the disappearance of consciousness.
👉 It is the disappearance of a particular identity.
The individual identifies with the body,
so death feels real.
But from the standpoint of the witness:
👉 it is merely a transition.
🚉 The Station Analogy
Body = train
Individual (jiva) = passenger
Witness = one standing on the platform
The passenger experiences the accident.
The one on the platform does not.
Meaning:
👉 Identification with the body → fear
👉 Abiding as the witness → freedom
🧠 The True Direction of Practice
The core message of this section:
👉 Move from particular knowledge
👉 to universal knowledge
In other words:
👉 from “I am a person”
👉 to “I am the witness”
📿 Warning of the Kena Upanishad
A crucial instruction:
👉 Realize this while the body still exists
Otherwise:
👉 it is a great loss
Because:
Body + mind
are instruments of inquiry
Without them, seeking is not possible.
☕ Cup–Coffee Analogy
Body = cup
Mind = cup
Consciousness = coffee
You drink
not the cup
👉 but the coffee
Likewise:
You are
not the body
not the mind
👉 but consciousness
🌟 Final Essence
The entire section conveys one truth:
👉 Personal knowledge perishes
👉 Knowledge of the Self never perishes
Death
is not the end of knowledge
👉 only a change of identity
Therefore:
Vijnāna → changing
Prajnāna → eternal
🌿 Part Three — Essence (Expanded)
1️⃣ Why the Cycle of Birth and Death?
The Bhagavad Gita declares:
👉 One who is born will surely die
👉 One who dies will be born again
This is not meant to frighten us.
👉 It is a warning born of compassion
Its purpose is to remind us
that life is a precious opportunity.
🌼 Who Is Bound by This Cycle?
A profound clarification:
👉 Not everyone is bound
Only those with particular knowledge (vishēsha-jnāna)
That is,
👉 As long as the idea “I am the body” remains
👉 Rebirth is inevitable
But when
👉 Universal knowledge (Brahman-awareness) dawns
👉 The cycle ends
🧠 From Particular to Universal
The central message of this section:
❌ Do not try to destroy particular knowledge
✅ Strengthen universal knowledge
Because
When light increases
darkness disappears
Likewise
When Brahman-contemplation deepens
ego naturally fades
📿 Brahma-Abhyāsa — The Real Practice
This is the heart of the teaching:
👉 Aham Brahmāsmi
👉 Sarvam Brahma (All is Brahman)
This vision must remain:
✔ in thought
✔ in speech
✔ in action
This is true nididhyāsana (deep contemplation).
🕊️ What Is Jīvanmukti?
When knowledge dawns:
👉 The body does not disappear
👉 The world does not disappear
But
👉 Identification disappears
Then:
Body = an instrument
World = an appearance
The Self remains
👉 the witness
This is liberation while living.
🔥 Videhamukti
When prārabdha karma is exhausted,
the body falls away.
This is called:
👉 Videhamukti
It is not a new state,
👉 only the continuation of jīvanmukti.
⚖️ Effort vs Destiny
A powerful instruction:
👉 Keep attention on effort
👉 Not on destiny (prārabdha)
Obsessing over destiny
👉 delays spiritual growth
Like counting milestones
while traveling.
🪔 Three Stages of the Path
All scriptures unfold in three steps:
1️⃣ Theory (Siddhānta)
2️⃣ Practice (Sādhana)
3️⃣ Realization (Siddhi)
From here onward,
the teaching moves toward
👉 the nature of liberation
🌟 When Does Knowledge Arise?
Seekers differ in intensity:
🐢 Slow
🚶 Moderate
⚡ Intense
But
👉 Knowledge itself is the same
🏔️ Are There Degrees in Liberation?
A crucial question.
Scripture clearly states:
👉 There is no difference in the fruit of liberation
Because
Liberation = Brahman
Brahman is one
Therefore
The result cannot vary.
📜 Core Aphorism
👉 Differences exist in effort
👉 No difference exists in realization
This teaching gives immense confidence
Because
Every sincere seeker
arrives at the same Truth.
🌊 Nature of Liberation
The Upanishads proclaim:
👉 Liberation is Brahman itself
Meaning:
Liberation is not a place
not an event
not an experience
👉 It is your true nature
🧭 Final Direction
The entire section in one line:
👉 From particular identity
👉 to witness-consciousness
That alone
is the path to liberation.
🌸 Final Essence
Birth and death
belong to the particular
Liberation
belongs to the universal
Practice
is Brahman-contemplation
Fruit
is abiding as Brahman
Therefore:
👉 Make effort
👉 Do not fear the result
In the end
Liberation is one —
👉 the nature of Brahman
🌼 Part Four — Expanded Essence
1️⃣ What Is Liberation (Moksha)?
The final declaration of Bhagavatpāda (Śaṅkara):
👉 Brahman itself is the state of liberation
This is the decisive conclusion.
It means:
❌ God is not separate from liberation
❌ Liberation is not a reward given by God
✅ God Himself is liberation
✅ Knowledge itself is liberation
🔱 Three Words — One Meaning
The heart of this section:
👉 Brahman
👉 Knowledge
👉 Liberation
Three different terms
but
👉 one and the same reality
So when knowledge arises,
it is not that liberation is attained —
👉 that knowledge itself is liberation.
🪞 Multiplicity — Only an Appearance
Brahman
👉 does not truly have many forms
Forms appear many,
but
👉 the substance is one
Like one face reflected in many mirrors
This is called
👉 appearance (ābhāsa).
🌊 Jīvanmukti and Videhamukti
A deep clarification:
Jīvanmukti
👉 the world of differences appears
👉 but is known as Brahman
Videhamukti
👉 the sense of difference fully dissolves
Yet
👉 these are not two separate realities
👉 only differences in experiential standpoint
⚖️ Differences in Practice — None in Result
A crucial doctrine:
👉 Seekers differ in speed
👉 Paths may differ
But
👉 Liberation is the same for all
Like many rivers
merging into one ocean.
🏔️ Why Liberation Has No Degrees
Because
👉 Liberation is not something produced
It is
👉 ever-accomplished
already complete
Therefore
👉 it cannot have levels.
🧠 Knowledge and the Known
A profound philosophical insight:
👉 Knowledge (vidyā)
👉 The known (Brahman)
Ultimately
👉 are not different
Meaning
The knower
the knowing
the known
all dissolve into one reality.
🪔 Saguna vs Nirguna
In Saguna worship:
👉 attributes can be added
👉 results can vary
But in Nirguna knowledge:
👉 there are no attributes
👉 therefore no differences
🌌 Divine Realms vs Brahman-Liberation
A vital distinction:
Heavenly worlds
and divine unions
👉 are results of karma
But
👉 Brahman-liberation transcends all of them
🧭 Liberation Is Not a Place
Final conclusion:
Liberation is
❌ not heaven
❌ not a world
❌ not a state
👉 it is the revelation of one’s true nature
🌟 The State of Supreme Serenity (Samprasāda)
According to the Chāndogya Upaniṣad:
👉 rising beyond the body
👉 merging in the supreme light
👉 abiding in one’s own nature
That
is liberation.
🛑 Deep Sleep vs Liberation
A profound distinction:
Deep Sleep Liberation
Latent impressions remain No impressions
Temporary Eternal
Ignorance Knowledge
Therefore
👉 deep sleep is not liberation
🌸 Final Import
Liberation
👉 is not something gained
👉 it is recognized
Knowledge
👉 is not a change
👉 it is understanding
Brahman
👉 is not a goal
👉 it is your nature
🕊️ Part Four — Final Essence (Brief)
Brahman alone is liberation
Knowledge itself is Brahman
Multiplicity is appearance
Differences exist in practice
None in the result
Liberation
👉 is the ever-perfect nature
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti 🙏
