Brahma Sutra-🌕 Third Sūtra — śāstra-yonitvāt. Part 3
🌕 Third Sūtra — śāstra-yonitvāt
Part 3
“Because the śāstra alone is the source and the means for Brahma-jñāna.”
🌼 Rope–Snake Analogy: Why ONLY Scripture Can Reveal Brahman
This is one of the Guru’s most profound teachings.
If you understand this, you understand the entire Vedānta.
Darkness + rope = snake illusion
Rope = Brahman
Snake = jīva + jagat + Īśvara (threefold superimposition)
Darkness = ignorance (avidyā)
Fear = saṁsāra
Light = śāstra (scripture)
When the rope is hidden by darkness, the mind projects a snake.
Exactly the same way:
Brahman is hidden → mind projects
“I am the jīva,”
“This world is real,”
“There is another God outside me.”
All these are snake-forms projected on the rope of Brahman.
🔥 Snake or Rope — Which is Real?
No matter:
how many times you see the snake,
how many times your heart beats fast,
how many times you run from it…
The snake was NEVER real.
And that which is unreal can NEVER be removed by action.
Try anything:
beat the snake → it doesn’t go
worship the snake → it doesn’t go
fear the snake → it doesn’t go
meditate on the snake → it doesn’t go
Why?
👉 Because the snake never existed.
Exactly the same way:
Saṁsāra never truly exists.
Only the appearance exists.
What eats you is not sorrow —
What eats you is believing sorrow is real.
⭐ Then how does the snake disappear?
There is only one way:
**Bring a lamp → the snake vanishes instantly
Bring knowledge → saṁsāra vanishes instantly**
Not by:
karma
ritual
meditation alone
logic
Only by light.
The “lamp” is:
Śāstra = the lamp of Brahma-jñāna
Why ONLY śāstra?
🕯️ Why not the mind? Why not the senses?
Because:
Mind projects illusions
Senses misreport in darkness
Logic is built on both mind + sense data
In darkness the eyes insist: “This is a snake!”
Only light—something independent of the mind—can reveal the rope.
So too:
Mind cannot reveal Brahman
Senses cannot reveal Brahman
Logic cannot reveal Brahman
Only śāstra, the direct revelation of sages, can remove ignorance.
🌒 What does śāstra do?
Śāstra = light
Śravaṇa → lighting the lamp
Manana → stabilizing the lamp
Nididhyāsana → clearing all remaining darkness
Śāstra declares:
Jīva = Brahman
Īśvara = Brahman
Jagat = Brahman
All sorrow = projection
When this is heard:
Rope becomes visible
Snake disappears
Fear ends
Duality collapses
Aham–Brahmasmi becomes immediate
This is why:
“For knowing Brahman, there is no means other than śāstra.”
🌟 PART 3 — Summary
> Saṁsāra is not a snake.
The ‘snake’ is darkness (ignorance).
The ‘lamp’ is scripture.
When light shines, only the rope—Brahman—remains.
Mokṣa is knowing the snake never existed.
🌕 PART 4
**“Brahman is never an object of worship.
Brahman is the One that makes worship possible.”**
⭐ **1) Upāsanā is NOT Brahman
The power behind upāsanā IS Brahman**
In any worship three factors exist:
1. The act
2. The worshipper (mind)
3. The deity worshipped
Wherever this tripuṭi exists:
the worshipper is limited
the deity is different
the act is in between
Thus:
> Where tripuṭi exists, Brahman is not recognized.
Guru’s powerful line:
“Turn back from all three;
what remains as the Witness — THAT is Brahman.”
⭐ 2) Threefold Silence = Brahman
Physical silence – body’s movement ceases
Verbal silence – words stop
Mental silence – thought stops
When all three fall silent, Brahman shines by Itself.
Because:
Words = names
Thoughts = forms
Actions = movement
Where these exist, Brahman appears “hidden.”
Where they vanish, Brahman is self-evident.
⭐ 3) Why Śaṅkara dismisses ALL karma
Guru summarized it sharply:
> “If it moves, it is not Brahman.”
Brahman = stillness
Karma = movement
Movement cannot reveal the stillness behind it.
⭐ 4) Real meaning of “śāstra-yonitvāt”
Śāstra is the “cause” of Brahma-jñāna, but NOT by producing Brahman.
Because:
Brahman cannot be produced
Brahman cannot be modified
Brahman cannot be purified
Brahman cannot be obtained
Śāstra does only one thing:
removes the ignorance blocking the ever-present Brahman.
It does NOT give Brahman.
It simply removes the veil.
⭐ 5) Upaniṣads NEVER “show” Brahman as an object
They don’t say:
❌ “Look, Brahman is there!”
That would create:
seer–seen duality.
Instead they say:
✔ “YOU are That.”
✔ “This Self is Brahman.”
They remove the false and reveal the truth already present.
Like your grandmother saying:
“Child, the necklace you are searching for is on your neck.”
She didn’t give the necklace —
she removed your ignorance.
⭐ 6) Four types of karma — none apply to Brahman
All karmas fall into four types:
1. Production
2. Modification
3. Acquisition
4. Purification
None apply to Brahman:
Brahman is not born
Brahman does not change
Brahman is not elsewhere
Brahman is not impure
Therefore:
Mokṣa can NEVER come from karma.
⭐ 7) The Ultimate Point — “You were ALWAYS free.”
Guru’s decisive teaching:
> “Bondage is forgetting.
Liberation is remembering.”
Jñāna = remembering your own nature
Śāstra = removes forgetfulness
Brahman = your own Self
⭐ 8) Guru’s final Advaita arrow
> “Whatever you see —
see it as Brahman alone.
Stop there.
That is samādhi.”
When:
names fade
forms fade
thoughts fade
Only Brahman remains.
🌟 PART 4 — One-Line Essence
> Brahman is not an object to be found.
When all distinctions drop,
the Self that remains — THAT is Brahman.
Śāstra removes distinctions,
not give Brahman.
