“From Ignorance to Illumination: The Journey of the Jiva to Brahman”**~Vedanta Panchadashi
“From Ignorance to Illumination: The Journey of the Jiva to Brahman”**
🌼
The individual soul (jiva) is bound only by ignorance, and liberation comes only by recognizing its true identity as Brahman.
1. The Two Knowledges — Paroksha and Aparoksha
First comes paroksha jnana — indirect knowledge.
It is the understanding that Brahman exists, that Consciousness pervades everything, and that my own sense of “I am” is proof of that Consciousness.
But this remains theoretical.
Then comes aparoksha jnana — direct experience.
This is the recognition:
“Brahman is not elsewhere. I myself am that Pure Consciousness.”
2. How the Jiva is Bound
The jiva is not bound by the world.
It is bound by:
1. Ignorance (Ajnana) – “I do not know my true nature.”
2. Veiling (Avarana) – “I cannot see my own Self clearly.”
3. Projection (Vikshepa) – “I take myself to be the body, mind, and prana — the doer and enjoyer.”
This false identification produces:
Doership (kartritva)
Enjoyership (bhoktritva)
Sorrow, fear, restlessness
The entire cycle of samsara.
3. Why Brahman is Never Affected
All states — ignorance, sorrow, knowledge, liberation — appear in Brahman like images on a screen.
But the screen itself is untouched.
Likewise:
The world appears in Brahman
The jiva appears in Brahman
Bondage and liberation appear to the jiva, never to Brahman
Brahman is only the adhisthana, the unchanging base.
4. The True Cause of Bondage
Bondage comes from identity:
“I am the body”
“I am the mind”
“I am the doer”
“I am the experiencer”
This is abhimana — mistaken identification.
The moment this identity drops, the jiva recognizes its true nature — the witness, the pure Self.
5. How Liberation Happens
Two steps:
1. Paroksha Jnana removes the idea “Brahman does not exist.”
It destroys the non-existence error.
2. Aparoksha Jnana removes the idea “Brahman is separate from me.”
It destroys the misidentification error.
Finally the jiva sees:
“The world is Brahman, the mind is Brahman, and I — the witness of all — am that same Brahman.”
6. The Culmination
When ignorance dissolves, the jiva experiences:
No sorrow
No fear
No doership
No bondage
Only effortless fullness
This is Nirankusha Trupti — unconditioned contentment.
This is Jivanmukti — liberation while living.
