“Turn Inward.”(Look within, and you will find the Divine.) 🌺
Antarmukha Samārādhyā – Bahirmukha Sudurlabhā
.. Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam(162 sloka)
(With the perspective of Pratyabhijñā — Self-recognition)
🕉️ 1. Meaning & Essence
“Antarmukha Samārādhyā, Bahirmukha Sudurlabhā” means —
The Goddess is worshipped only by the inward-turned mind.
For the outward-looking mind, She is very difficult to reach.
The Devi says:
“I dwell within you.
Seek Me there —
For if you search outside, you will not find Me.”
This is not mere devotion, but the pure Advaitic truth —
The Goddess is Consciousness itself,
to be realized only through inward awareness.
🌸 2. Bahirmukha Sudurlabhā — The Limitation of Outwardness
When the mind turns outward,
it sees the world of duality — “I” and “That”, “Devotee” and “God”.
In that separation, the Self is veiled.
The Upanishad says:
> “Na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakam…”
There, no outer light shines —
only the Light of the Self illumines everything.
🌼 3. Pratyabhijñā — The Recognition of the Self
“Pratyabhijñā” means to recognize oneself again.
It is not new knowledge,
but the rediscovery of one’s forgotten divine nature.
When the mind turns inward,
the seeker realizes —
“I am That Light.”
This recognition is liberation itself.
🪞 4. The Mirror Analogy
The mind is like a mirror.
When it faces outward, you see the world.
When it turns inward, you see your true Self — the inner Light.
Outward vision shows multiplicity;
inward vision reveals unity.
🔆 5. Scriptural References
> “Ātmaiva asya jyotiḥ” — Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad
“Tat Tvam Asi” — Chāndogya Upaniṣad
“Aham Brahmāsmi” — Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad
All these declare the same truth —
The Goddess you seek is within you,
not elsewhere, not apart from you.
🌺 6. Summary
Inwardness is true worship.
Outwardness sustains illusion.
Pratyabhijñā is the direct recognition of one’s own divinity.
The Self shines as the Witness; there is nothing else to seek.
🕯️ 7. Closing Reflection
> “Turn your mind inward —
There you will meet the Goddess,
not as another,
but as your own radiant Self —
the Light of Consciousness.” 🌸
