🌿 The Transformation of Ishvara into Jiva – The Nature of Maya
1️⃣ What does it mean when we say Ishvara becomes Jiva?
Ishvara, the Supreme Lord, is all-knowing, all-powerful, and completely free.
Yet, due to His own power called Maya, He appears as a limited being — a Jiva.
This is not a real transformation, but only an appearance, a reflection in ignorance.
Just as the Sun’s reflection appears as many in different pots of water,
Ishvara seems to become many as Jivas — yet He remains one and unchanged.
2️⃣ What is Maya?
Maya means that which makes the unreal appear real.
Just as a rope appears as a snake in dim light,
Brahman (the Absolute) appears as this world.
The rope never changes into a snake —
similarly, Brahman never becomes the world.
The snake is seen, but never truly born;
so too, the world is experienced, but not ultimately real.
3️⃣ Who is the Jiva?
The Jiva is none other than Brahman Himself —
but due to ignorance (Avidya), he identifies with the body and mind.
He forgets his infinite nature and says, “I am this limited being.”
This mistaken identification is called bondage (bandha).
4️⃣ What is Moksha (Liberation)?
Moksha is not the gaining of something new —
it is the recognition of what already is.
When the ignorance of the snake goes away,
the rope alone remains as it always was.
Likewise, when knowledge arises,
the Jiva realizes, “I was never bound; I am Brahman itself.”
5️⃣ Difference between Ishvara’s creation and Jiva’s creation
Ishvara’s creation: born of Maya — He remains untouched, the Master.
Jiva’s creation: born of Avidya — he becomes bound, the servant.
Both are one in essence, but different in standpoint —
like the ocean and the wave, water is the same.
6️⃣ The Descent of the Jiva
The pure Consciousness (Paramatma) seems to enter a body,
creating a limited world around itself — just like
a mighty lion of the forest being captured and caged in a circus.
The lion is still a lion;
it only appears powerless within the cage.
So too, the Jiva forgets his true glory and suffers within the cage of body and mind.
7️⃣ The Power of Knowledge
Knowledge (Jnana) is like light.
When the lamp is lit, darkness disappears instantly —
darkness was never a thing; it was only absence of light.
Similarly, when Self-Knowledge dawns, Maya disappears —
but Brahman remains forever, changeless and infinite.
8️⃣ Essence of the Teaching
> “The snake was seen but never born;
the world is experienced but not real;
Brahman alone is the truth.”
🪶 Summary
Ishvara never truly becomes Jiva — the Jiva only forgets his divinity.
Maya is the veil that hides Reality.
Knowledge removes that veil; it does not create Brahman.
Liberation is not an event in time — it is awakening to what already is.
🕉️ Central Mahavakya
“Jivo Brahmaiva Na Aparah” —
The individual soul is none other than Brahman Itself.
