“Not This, Not That — The Silence of the Self”-Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

1. The Unified Goal of the Vedas — One Self (Eka-Ātma)

Though the Vedas begin with rituals, sacrifices, and duties, their final purpose is Self-Knowledge (Ātma-Jñāna).
The Upanishads declare:

> “The Self alone is real — everything else is a superimposition (upādhi).”

Karma purifies the mind;
Knowledge alone liberates.
Thus, Śaṅkara concludes that the essence of all Vedas is the realization of the One Self.

2. The Need for Scriptural Discernment (Śāstrārtha Viveka)

The Upanishads contain two kinds of statements: 1️⃣ Those that recommend rituals and duties — “One should perform Agnihotra throughout life.”
2️⃣ Those that instruct renunciation and knowledge — “Having known the Self, one should renounce and seek Brahman.”

This apparent contradiction creates confusion for seekers.
Śaṅkara teaches that the confusion is not in the Vedas, but in our understanding.
Hence, one must practice Śāstrārtha Viveka — discriminative insight to know what the scripture truly means and when it applies.

He resolves the paradox beautifully:

> “Karma is for purification; Jñāna is for liberation.”

3. The Core of the Teaching — The ‘Neti Neti’ Method

The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad concludes with the famous teaching:

> “Neti Neti Ātmaiva Niṣṭhā” — “Not this, not this — the Self alone remains.”

This is the heart of Advaita Vedānta.
‘Neti Neti’ means rejecting everything that is not the Self —
the body, mind, intellect, desires, even subtle experiences —
until the pure awareness alone shines.

It is not denial born of ignorance; it is denial born of clarity.
When all thoughts subside in the witness, that stillness itself is Self-realization.

4. True Renunciation — Inner Detachment, Not Outer Color

Śaṅkara redefines renunciation:

> “Neti Neti itself is renunciation.”

To say “I am not this, I am not that” — and to rest as the witnessing consciousness —
that is true Sannyāsa.

It is not about saffron robes or external withdrawal,
but about inward freedom from identification.

Yājñavalkya told Maitreyī at the end:

> “There is nothing more to know —
‘Neti Neti Ātma Jñāna’ itself is immortality.”

5. Śaṅkara’s Humility — The Mark of True Wisdom

Śaṅkara concludes with rare humility:

> “I can only explain as far as my intellect allows.”

Even the greatest sage bows to the Infinite.
He reminds his disciples —
True knowledge blossoms only in the soil of humility.

6. The Essence of Advaitic Vision

The Vedas are not contradictory; our perception is.

Karma purifies; Knowledge liberates.

Neti–Neti is both renunciation and realization.

The Self alone exists — changeless, formless, eternal.

Humility and discernment sustain the flame of wisdom.

✨ Final Realization

> “Without Śāstrārtha Viveka, practice becomes confusion.
Without Neti–Neti Niṣṭhā, knowledge remains theory.
When both unite — clarity and contemplation —
the seeker awakens to the truth:
‘All this is verily Brahman.’”
