🔱 The Doctrine of Maya — Unified Summary 🔱
🔱 The Doctrine of Maya — Unified Summary 🔱
Maya is the mysterious, inexplicable power of Brahman (Pure Consciousness).
It conceals the Truth and projects the false.
🌑 Two Functions of Maya
1️⃣ Avarana Shakti – veils our true nature (Atman)
2️⃣ Vikshepa Shakti – projects the universe on that Truth
Maya depends on Consciousness to appear
yet pretends as if it has independent authority.
It is described as:
> Aghatanaghatanapatiyasi
— the power to make the impossible appear possible!
🌍 The World is a Grand Illusion
The world appears real to our senses…
but we can’t logically explain:
• where it came from
• why it appears
• what its true basis is
So the world is:
Evident (we see it)
Indefinable (we cannot explain it)
Thus it is Indra-jaalam — a cosmic magic show!
👁 Reality depends on the Observer
Level of Vision How the World Appears Dominant Attribute
Ignorant person “This is absolutely real!” Tamas
Scientist/Intellectual “Partly known, mostly unknown.” Rajas
Enlightened Knower “Forms are false; Brahman alone is real.” Sattva
As understanding deepens,
the falsity of the world becomes clearer.
❌ Maya cannot be destroyed by questioning
Question ➝ Question ➝ More questions
Doubt ➝ Doubt ➝ More doubt
Questioning itself is the play of Maya.
> “Samshayatma Vinashyati”
— Bhagavad Gita
(The doubting mind destroys itself.)
✅ The Way Out of Maya
Not interrogation… but realization:
✅ Viveka (Discrimination) — Rope, not snake
✅ Meditation — Silence of mind
✅ Grace of Guru
✅ Dropping ego and misconceptions
The world is like ornaments;
Brahman is like Gold.
Forms appear and vanish,
the substance remains eternal.
🕉 Essence
> Maya makes One appear as many.
Knowledge realizes the One behind the many.
