🕉️ Brihadaranyaka Upanishad — From the Three States to Turiya: The Awakening to the Self-Luminous Consciousness
🕉️ Brihadaranyaka Upanishad — From the Three States to Turiya: The Awakening to the Self-Luminous Consciousness
🌼 1. The Meaning of “Om Shanti Shanti Shantih”
> “Om Shanti Shanti Shantih”
signifies freedom from the bondage of the three states — waking (jagrat), dream (svapna), and deep sleep (sushupti).
Realizing the fourth state, Turiya, and abiding in one’s own Self-awareness — that alone is true peace and liberation (moksha).
🌿 2. The Two Halves of the Journey
The first half (Purvārtha) — waking, dream, and deep sleep.
The second half (Uttarārtha) — the Turiya, pure witnessing consciousness.
Ignorance (Avidya), desire (Kama), and action (Karma) belong to the first half.
Pure awareness, the Self-luminous Witness, belongs to the second.
Remaining in the first half keeps one bound to samsara;
crossing to the second leads to freedom and peace.
🔶 3. The Fourth State — Turiya, the Substratum Consciousness
Turiya is not far away — it pervades the three states.
We fail to grasp it because it is the substratum (adhishthana) upon which all other states appear and disappear.
> “Even when unseen, the substratum ever exists — recognizing it is seeing it.”
🐟 4. The Great Fish Analogy — Consciousness Unaffected by States
The Upanishad gives a striking metaphor:
A great fish swims between two banks of a river, yet belongs to neither.
Similarly, consciousness moves through waking, dream, and sleep —
yet none of these states define it.
It remains free and untouched — the Witness Consciousness.
🌙 5. The Source of the Three States — Ignorance
Avidya (ignorance), Kama (desire), and Karma (action)
are the roots of the three states.
Remove ignorance and desire ceases;
without desire, there is no action;
without action, there is no bondage.
> Ignorance is the seed of all bondage.
🦉 6. The Owl Analogy — The Nature of Ignorance
The Guru gives a profound image:
An owl lives in daylight but still believes it is dark.
Likewise, though we are ever in the light of Atma Chaitanya (Self-awareness),
ignorance prevents us from seeing it.
> “The Self neither rises nor sets;
It is the self-effulgent, eternal light of awareness.”
🔷 7. Is Ignorance Inherent or Accidental?
The Upanishad raises a deep question —
Is ignorance the nature of the Self, or an external addition?
If ignorance were intrinsic, liberation would be impossible.
If it were extrinsic (agantuka), it can be removed.
The scripture declares —
> Ignorance is accidental, not essential.
When it is removed by knowledge, the Self shines by itself.
🔱 8. The Three States and the Witness
Waking: outer experiences.
Dream: inner experiences, projections of memory.
Deep Sleep: peaceful rest, yet with ignorance.
But transcending all three is the Witness — the Turiya Consciousness.
> “You are not the states;
you are the Witness of them all.”
🌾 9. Vasanas — Shadows of Ignorance
Vasanas (impressions) stored in the subtle body appear as dreams.
They are residues of past actions and experiences.
Purifying these is sadhana (spiritual practice).
When purified, the mind becomes transparent like a crystal,
reflecting the inner Self-light clearly.
🔔 10. From Deep Sleep to Turiya
Deep sleep (sushupti) is near to liberation — free from sorrow,
yet covered by ignorance.
Turiya transcends even this ignorance, revealing pure awareness.
> “Waking, dream, and sleep are not yours —
You are the Witness Consciousness itself.”
🌸 11. Essence of Liberation
The Self-luminous Consciousness is ever present.
Ignorance hides it but cannot destroy it.
Knowledge alone dispels ignorance.
When ignorance, desire, and action dissolve —
only peace remains.
That peace is “Om Shanti Shanti Shantih.”
🕊️ Key Teaching
> “The owl’s blindness does not eclipse the sun;
so too, ignorance cannot veil the Self.
When the eye of knowledge opens,
darkness vanishes — and that is liberation.” 🌼
