🌺 1. What is a Dream?
🌺 1. What is a Dream?
A dream is an experience created by the mind during sleep.
While the senses and body rest, the mind continues to function, weaving images, emotions, and memories into what we call dreams.
Dreams are the play of the mind when the outer world is silent.
🕉️ 2. The Vedantic View
The Mandukya Upanishad says:
> “Swapna-sthānaḥ antaḥ-prajñaḥ” — The dream state is the inner world of consciousness.
Vedanta teaches that there are three states of experience:
1. Jāgrat (waking) – experience of the outer world.
2. Swapna (dream) – experience of the inner world created by the mind.
3. Suṣupti (deep sleep) – absence of both, where the Self rests in peace.
In all three states, one constant witness (Sakshi) is present — the Self (Ātman).
The body, mind, and dreams change, but you — the pure awareness — never change.
🧘♀️ 3. Yogic Perspective
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras say:
> “Swapna-nidrā jñāna-ālambanam itarā-smṛtiḥ”
— Dreams and sleep are also forms of mental activity (vrittis).
For a yogi, dreams reflect the restlessness or purity of the mind.
When the mind becomes pure and still through meditation, dreams become calm, clear, or even disappear altogether — leading to deep inner clarity.
🧠 4. Psychological View
Modern psychology (Freud, Jung) sees dreams as the voice of the subconscious mind.
They are symbolic expressions of:
suppressed desires,
unresolved emotions, and
inner guidance from deeper layers of the psyche.
Carl Jung also said that dreams are messages from the deeper Self, guiding the conscious mind toward wholeness.
🔮 5. Spiritual Meaning
Sathguru Subramuniyaswami beautifully said:
> “Dreams are the mirror of the mind.
They do not belong to the body,
but they show the direction in which the mind is traveling.”
For a spiritual seeker, dreams can sometimes be:
symbolic messages from the inner guru,
purification experiences, or
reflections of spiritual progress.
But true seekers are advised not to cling to dreams,
but to look for the inner teaching behind them.
🌕 6. Three Types of Dreams
1. Manasa Swapna – mind-created dreams based on daily thoughts and emotions.
2. Daivika Swapna – divinely inspired dreams carrying higher guidance.
3. Karmika Swapna – karmic release dreams where past impressions are exhausted.
✨ 7. Lucid Dreaming – Spiritual Awareness in Dream
When a person realizes “I am dreaming” while still inside a dream,
it is called lucid dreaming or swapna-jagrata.
This awareness is a higher yogic state,
because it shows that the dreamer has become conscious even within illusion.
It is very close to enlightenment — recognizing awareness even in sleep.
🔔 8. The Four States of Consciousness (Vedantic Chart)
State World Experienced Nature of the Self
Jāgrat (Waking) Outer World Sensory Experience
Swapna (Dream) Inner World Mental Projection
Suṣupti (Deep Sleep) None (Blankness) Rest in Self
Turīya (Transcendental) Witness of All Pure Consciousness
🌼 Summary
Dreams are not illusions apart from you — they are the expressions of your own consciousness.
Just as waves rise and fall on the surface of the ocean, dreams rise and fall in the ocean of the Self.
Vedanta finally declares:
> “You are not the dreamer, nor the dream,
but the pure Awareness in which both appear and disappear.” ✨
