Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad – Antaryāmi Brāhmaṇa(Sri YSR Guruji’s Class Notes – English Summary)
1️⃣ Antaryāmi Brāhmaṇa – Main Essence
🔹 Key Verse (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 3.7.3 – 3.7.23)
> He who dwells in the earth, yet is within the earth, whom the earth does not know, whose body is the earth, who from within controls the earth –
That is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
🔹 Meaning
Within earth, water, fire, air, space, sun, moon, stars, deities, senses, mind, intellect, and life-force – there sits the “Inner Controller” (Antaryāmi).
Though unseen externally, He directs everything from within.
That Inner Controller is your very Self.
🔹 Advaitic Import
Body, senses, mind – these are only coverings (upādhis).
The Consciousness within – that is the Antaryāmi Ātman.
Doership (“I act”) and enjoyership (“I experience”) are illusions (mithyā).
The Inner Controller alone is Truth (Satya).
🔹 Śaṅkara Bhāṣya Summary
“Therefore, all actions are dependent on the Supreme Self.”
“Tat Tvam Asi” → That Supreme Self, you are.
---
2️⃣ The Three Desires (Eṣaṇās) – Wife, Son, Wealth/World
The main cravings of man are:
Dāreṣaṇā = Desire for wife.
Putreṣaṇā = Desire for children.
Vitta/Loḳeṣaṇā = Desire for wealth / worldly gains.
Śaṅkara explains:
Ultimately, all these collapse into Loḳeṣaṇā (attachment to the world).
The world (loka) is always “other” than the Self.
One who realizes the Self transcends all such desires.
---
3️⃣ Relation of Means (Sādhana) and Goal (Sādhya)
In the world, everything exists as either a means (sādhana) or a goal (sādhya).
In Self-knowledge, these two merge:
The fruit and the path are the same.
There is nothing apart from it.
---
4️⃣ Yājñavalkya – Gārgī Dialogue (Essence)
🔹 Question
“Earth is established in water, water in fire, fire in air, air in space… But in what is everything finally established?”
🔹 Answer
“All is finally established in the Imperishable (Akṣara Brahman).”
🔹 Key Verse
> Two birds, inseparable friends, perch on the same tree.
One eats the sweet fruit; the other simply looks on.
The bird that eats = the individual soul (jīva).
The bird that witnesses = the witnessing Self (sākṣī ātmā).
---
5️⃣ Three Stages – Learning, Childlike State, Silence
(As explained in Sri YSR Guruji’s class)
1. Learning (Pāṇḍitya) = Understanding the Self through scriptures.
2. Childlike State (Bālyam) = Spontaneous freedom from worldly thoughts.
3. Silence (Maunam) = Total dissolution of non-Self impressions; abiding in stillness.
After these three, one becomes Kṛtakṛtya – fulfilled, with nothing more to accomplish.
---
6️⃣ Key Sentences to Remember
Eṣa te ātmā antaryāmy amṛtaḥ – This is your Self, the immortal Inner Controller.
Tat Tvam Asi – That Thou Art.
Ātmaiva idam sarvam – All this is nothing but the Self.
Satyasya satyam paramā parātmā – The Supreme Self is the Truth of truth.
Nānyo’sti draṣṭā, nānyo’sti śrotā – There is no seer or hearer other than the Self.
Nāyam ātmā balahīnena labhyaḥ (Kaṭha Upaniṣad) – The Self is not attained by the weak.
---
7️⃣ Advaita Essence
The body, the insentient, and the world are like outer coverings.
The Consciousness within is the Antaryāmi Ātman.
One who realizes this:
Becomes free from the three desires.
Sees no difference between means and goal.
Abides in silence, in the Self.
📝 Conclusion
The Antaryāmi Brāhmaṇa and the Yājñavalkya–Gārgī dialogue both point to the same truth:
> “The Inner Controller seated within, directing all, is none other than You – your own Self.
He who realizes this becomes free from bondage.”
